Whither or No- Hannah Pugh
Hannah Pugh is a Birmingham‑based contemporary artist working with ink, bleach, acrylic, watercolour, and gilded details to create atmospheric, otherworldly abstract landscapes. Her intuitive mixed‑media process blends memory, imagination, and magical realism, resulting in dreamlike works that drift between reality and daydream.
This piece is from Hannah Pugh’s debut exhibition at Seventh Circle, ‘All Is Not Lost - Crossing Into Elsewhere, a collection exploring transformation and the spaces we move through.
WHITHER OR NO
Original Artwork
Writing ink, bleach, acrylic, pastel on raw canvas.
Framed size - W 58 cm x L 93 cm
Presented in a custom, bespoke frame with a mixed stain, meticulously hand-finished, artfully distressed, and expertly hand-waxed.
Whither or No is created with writing ink, bleach, acrylic and pastel on raw canvas. The title comes from a phrase passed down through Hannah’s family, “whither or no,” used by her mother and grandmother to describe a feeling of being neither here nor there. “I think it’s Scottish in origin,” she says, “and it perfectly captures that in‑between state.”
The work is inspired by the same mermaid pool on Bigbury Sands that informed Pool and Summertide. Hannah was struck by the way Whistler gathered impressions from nature and then returned to his studio to reinterpret them from memory. “My studio process here is inspired by Whistler,” she explains, “his propensity to gather images in his head only, then re‑imagine them on the canvas.”
The result is a painting that holds the emotional weather of an in‑between moment, a threshold between memory and imagination, land and sea, presence and drift.
