Weyward- Hannah Pugh

£3,150.00

Hannah Pugh is a Birmingham‑based contemporary artist working with ink, bleach, acrylic, watercolour, and gilded details to create atmospheric, otherworldly abstract landscapes. Her intuitive mixed‑media process blends memory, imagination, and magical realism, resulting in dreamlike works that drift between reality and daydream.

Weyward is created with writing ink, bleach, acrylic, pastel and 24ct gold leaf on plywood. The title draws on an obsolete spelling of weird from Old English, while also echoing wayward, someone who follows their own path and resists control. Hannah describes the word as “an instruction, part of a set of directions for how to get to Elsewhere,” and the painting carries that sense of guidance, mystery and divergence.

At the centre of the composition is a strange, luminous pool inspired by Butterbrook Reservoir on Dartmoor, a secluded, concrete‑lined basin holding turquoise water, surrounded by a dark copse of trees. “It’s a weird, closed‑off pool,” she explains, “manmade lines in concrete holding the water from a stream hostage, emanating a strange turquoise glow, all of it in the wilds of craggy, untameable Dartmoor.” Hannah had never visited the site in person when she painted this piece, only seen photographs, which added to its mythic pull.

A stork‑like bird moves quietly across the scene. Hannah notes that all the birds she uses in this series are species that mate for life, calm, steady presences that embody the idea of “crossing into Elsewhere.” The bird becomes a guide, a witness, a traveller passing through.
