The Spinney (Sun Candle) - Hannah Pugh

£3,150.00

Hannah Pugh is a Birmingham‑based contemporary artist working with ink, bleach, acrylic, watercolour, and gilded details to create atmospheric, otherworldly abstract landscapes. Her intuitive mixed‑media process blends memory, imagination, and magical realism, resulting in dreamlike works that drift between reality and daydream.

This piece is from Hannah Pugh’s debut exhibition at Seventh Circle, ‘All Is Not Lost - Crossing Into Elsewhere, a collection exploring transformation and the spaces we move through.

The Spinney (Sun Candle) is created with writing ink, bleach, cartridge paper, acrylic, pastel and 24ct gold leaf on plywood. It is the sister painting to Weyward, and together the two works form a pair of portals into Elsewhere.

The title comes from a childhood place, the Spinney at the bottom of Hannah’s grandparents’ garden. “I was always playing in there,” she recalls, “creating worlds, telling stories, or reading my book tucked up in the roots of a tree.” As a child of the 1980s, her imaginative landscape was shaped by The NeverEnding Story, Labyrinth and the TV show Willo the Wisp, all of which “were swirling around in my head as I painted this slice of Elsewhere.”

As the painting developed, Hannah realised she was depicting a scene from within Weyward. “I began imagining that I was stood down by the pool amongst the trees, looking toward the glowing door at the far end.” The stones visible beneath the water are based on the ever‑growing collection gifted to her by her son, Sylvan, each one accompanied by a story. They symbolise connection and the grounding threads of family.

The piece brings together all of Hannah’s processes: a fragment of ink‑and‑bleach paper made years earlier and now rehomed within the composition; layers of acrylic paint and glazing; and soluble crayon drawing. The result is a richly textured, multi‑layered work that feels like a remembered place, a dreamscape and a threshold all at once.
