The Glimmer Series - Sam Weeks
Hailing from the vibrant, second city Birmingham, UK Sam is emerging as a visionary abstract painter. Her journey in Fine Art at the University of Central England has led her to a unique creative philosophy: ‘Notice what you notice.’ This mantra propels her to follow the unexpected, wherever it may lead.
Sam’s artistry unfolds instinctively on the canvas, a testament to the journey rather than the destination. Her process is a dance with chance, where the interplay of intellect and instinct crafts a visual narrative that’s both spontaneous and profound.
The Glimmer Series
Sam Weeks' new Glimmer Series marks a departure from her previous work inspired by the I Ching. While moving away from that theme, Weeks retained the spiritual insights and painting techniques she had developed, such as her use of asemic writing, a form of art where the text appears to be writing but is deliberately made unreadable. This distinctive feature, reminiscent of letter-like marks or symbols, has become a hallmark of her style.
The Glimmer Series was inspired by the concept of “glimmers” – small moments of joy that brighten the day, a practice often encouraged for maintaining a positive mindset, particularly in managing mental health. Weeks aimed to evoke this feeling of upliftment through her work, creating paintings that offer a sense of lightness, emotional resilience, and mental buoyancy.
Compact and colourful, the paintings in the Glimmer Series are designed to be eye-catching without overwhelming a space. Instead, they act as “little jewels” of radiant joy, offering viewers a moment of visual delight—like catching a glimpse of light through the darkness or a window to something brighter beyond the ordinary. Through this series, Weeks hopes to spark smiles and bring a sense of unconditional happiness to everyday life.
