The City of 9 Doors Series - Hannah Pugh
Hannah Pugh is a Birmingham‑based contemporary artist working with ink, bleach, acrylic, watercolour, and gilded details to create atmospheric, otherworldly abstract landscapes. Her intuitive mixed‑media process blends memory, imagination, and magical realism, resulting in dreamlike works that drift between reality and daydream.
This pieces is from Hannah Pugh’s debut exhibition at Seventh Circle, ‘All Is Not Lost - Crossing Into Elsewhere, a collection exploring transformation and the spaces we move through.
THE CITY OF 9 DOORS SERIES
The City of 9 Doors series draws on Hannah Pugh’s fascination with mythic architecture, thresholds and the symbolic idea of the body as a house of many openings. The title references a concept found across spiritual traditions, the idea that humans are “cities” with nine doors through which we perceive, experience and move through the world. Hannah often speaks about her interest in “the places where the physical and the metaphysical overlap,” and these works explore that liminal territory.
THE CITY OF 9 DOORS I
The City of 9 Doors I is a mixed media work that blends ink and acrylic to create a shifting, architectural form. The composition suggests a structure that is both ancient and fluid, echoing Hannah’s belief that “we are all houses full of openings, ways in, ways out, ways through.” The layered marks evoke pathways, thresholds and internal passageways, inviting the viewer to consider the body as a site of movement and transformation.

THE CITY OF 9 DOORS II
The City of 9 Doors II continues the exploration of internal architecture and symbolic thresholds. Ink and acrylic form a network of lines and shapes that feel like a cross between a blueprint and a dream‑map. Hannah describes these works as “structures that don’t quite obey the rules of physics,” reflecting her interest in imagined spaces and the permeability between inner and outer worlds.
