Summertide - Hannah Pugh
Hannah Pugh is a Birmingham‑based contemporary artist working with ink, bleach, acrylic, watercolour, and gilded details to create atmospheric, otherworldly abstract landscapes. Her intuitive mixed‑media process blends memory, imagination, and magical realism, resulting in dreamlike works that drift between reality and daydream.
This piece is from Hannah Pugh’s debut exhibition at Seventh Circle, ‘All Is Not Lost - Crossing Into Elsewhere, a collection exploring transformation and the spaces we move through.

Summertide is created with writing ink, bleach, copper leaf and acrylic on raw canvas. The work draws on the visual language of Romantic painting, warm light, dramatic skies and a sense of emotional vastness. Hannah describes wanting “the feeling of an Old Masters Romantic painting, the warm lighting and melodramatic sky,” noting that Whistler’s Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket was a significant influence.
The composition captures a moment of celestial movement, as if the stars themselves are in motion. “I was imagining the stars rushing and swooping down from the sky into the sea and being washed ashore,” she explains. Copper leaf adds a burnished glow, echoing the warmth of twilight and the shimmer of falling light.
Summertide sits at the intersection of the cosmic and the earthly, a luminous threshold where sky, sea and imagination meet.
