Relics - Hannah Pugh
Hannah Pugh is a Birmingham‑based contemporary artist working with ink, bleach, acrylic, watercolour, and gilded details to create atmospheric, otherworldly abstract landscapes. Her intuitive mixed‑media process blends memory, imagination, and magical realism, resulting in dreamlike works that drift between reality and daydream.
This piece is from Hannah Pugh’s debut exhibition at Seventh Circle, ‘All Is Not Lost - Crossing Into Elsewhere, a collection exploring transformation and the spaces we move through.
RELICS
The Relics series is built from antique etchings of the arches and doorways of Morwenstow Church in Cornwall. Hannah is drawn to relics as “precious fragments of the past,” objects that hold stories and traces of belief. Although she isn’t religious in a traditional sense, she often speaks about her sense that “there’s something else, an Elsewhere, that lives in the everyday, just out of the corner of your eye.”
Gold has been used in sacred objects for centuries, and Hannah incorporates 24ct gold leaf to create a sense of reverence and material worth. She describes the series as “a luxurious reverie, a literal glimmer in the darkness,” and recalls being reminded of Tolkien’s words while working: “All that is gold does not glitter…”
Relic I
Relic I combines ink, acrylic, antique etching and 24ct gold leaf on wood to create a luminous fragment of architectural memory. The arches and doorways of Morwenstow Church become portals into imagined spaces, echoing Hannah’s belief that “religious doorways may lead to more places than one.” The gold leaf adds a sacred shimmer, elevating the etching into a contemporary relic.
Ink, 24ct gold leaf, antique etching, acrylic on wood.
Original Artwork
Framed Size - 31 cm x 29 cm
Presented in an antiqued, ornate black frame and mounted on blackest black board.
Relic II
Relic II continues the exploration of sacred architecture and mythic thresholds. Antique etching, ink, acrylic and gold leaf combine to create a fragment that feels both historical and otherworldly. Hannah often speaks about her fascination with “the thin places”, locations where the veil between worlds feels permeable. This piece captures that sense of quiet mystery and deep time.
