Hannah Pugh is a Birmingham‑based contemporary artist working with ink, bleach, acrylic, watercolour, and gilded details to create atmospheric, otherworldly abstract landscapes. Presented in a custom, bespoke frame with a mixed stain, meticulously hand-finished, artfully distressed, and expertly hand-waxed.
Pool is created with writing ink, bleach, acrylic and pastel on raw canvas. The work is rooted in a moment of unexpected discovery: after attending a funeral, Hannah visited Bigbury Sands and stumbled upon a hidden mermaid pool, a concrete structure filled with eerily glowing turquoise water, concealed from view unless you scrambled over the rocks. “I was so drawn to it and couldn’t stop thinking about it when I got back to the studio,” she says. “But it made me feel uneasy as well as fascinated. I even dreamt about it.”
That tension, beauty edged with unease, shapes the atmosphere of Pool. Hannah describes returning to the memory “like worrying at a scab,” captivated by the pool’s strange, luminous presence. The doorway motif reveals the raw underpainting beneath, exposing the very first layer of the picture. “I mask this off and then work around it,” she explains, “building up thicker acrylic paint, soluble pastel lines and dots of bleach within the ink.”
The result is a work that feels both intimate and uncanny: a threshold into a place that is alluring, unsettling and impossible to forget.
