Let It Slide - Clare Chinnery
Clare Chinnery is a British artist based on the Wirral whose work explores the charged tension between beauty and decay. Working primarily in oil paint, she builds rich, tactile surfaces through layering, scraping, and gestural mark‑making, often punctuated with bursts of spray paint that bring energy and immediacy to her compositions. Drawing inspiration from seventeenth‑century Dutch Vanitas painting, Clare reimagines classical still‑life symbolism through a contemporary, quietly rebellious lens. Her floral works in particular carry a punk sensibility, luminous, emotional, and alive, rejecting the saccharine in favour of something raw and resonant. Clare studied Fine Art Painting at Liverpool John Moores University and has exhibited widely across the UK, with work held in private collections internationally.
Let It Slide
Original Artwork
Oil Paint and Spray paint on Canvas
Framed Measurements 64 cm x 46 cm
‘Let It Slide’ is a painting shaped as much by its process as its subject. What began as a deceptively simple arrangement, a jug of flowers became a work that demanded patience, persistence, and emotional honesty. Clare describes it as “challenging to complete,” and that challenge is visible in the best possible way: the painting carries the imprint of every decision, every revision, every moment of push and pull.
Thick, textured layers of oil paint build a surface that feels almost sculptural. The flowers don’t just sit in the jug, they emerge from it with weight, presence, and a tactile immediacy that invites you closer. The composition has a quiet intensity, a sense of something fought for and ultimately resolved.
This is a piece that rewards slow looking. A work shaped by its making, full of depth, texture, and emotional resonance.
