DOOR (Speak friend and enter) - Hannah Pugh
Hannah Pugh is a Birmingham‑based contemporary artist working with ink, bleach, acrylic, watercolour, and gilded details to create atmospheric, otherworldly abstract landscapes. Her intuitive mixed‑media process blends memory, imagination, and magical realism, resulting in dreamlike works that drift between reality and daydream.
This piece is from Hannah Pugh’s debut exhibition at Seventh Circle, ‘All Is Not Lost - Crossing Into Elsewhere, a collection exploring transformation and the spaces we move through.
DOOR (Speak friend and enter)
Original Artwork
Writing ink, bleach, acrylic, pastel on raw canvas.
Framed size - W 48 cm x L 73 cm
Presented in a custom, bespoke frame with a mixed stain, meticulously hand-finished, artfully distressed, and expertly hand-waxed.
Door (Speak Friend and Enter) is created with writing ink, bleach, acrylic and pastel on raw canvas. The central doorway reveals the very first layer of the painting, the raw underpainting, a motif that recurs throughout Hannah’s work. “Again, the doorway is a view into the original first layer,” she explains. “I mask this off and then continue to work around it.”
Her process begins with saturating the canvas in ink, water, bleach and diluted acrylic, allowing the mixture to spread in tendrils and settle unpredictably. “I come back to see how it’s decided to dry,” she says, “and then take my cues from the story I can see emerging, adding layers and more detailed mark‑making to control and define some areas.” The piece reflects her ongoing interest in balancing opposites: dark and light, accuracy and organic movement, chaos and control.
While painting this work, Hannah was thinking about the journey to Durin’s Door in The Lord of the Rings, a threshold that appears only when the right conditions, and the right words, are present. That sense of hidden entryways and mythic passageways infuses the piece with quiet narrative tension.
