Ayako - Sophie-Rose Walters
Sophie-Rose Walters is a mixed-media artist whose practice explores identity, heritage, and symbolism through the lens of Japanese culture. Known for her distinctive line work, vibrant colour palettes, and recurring cultural motifs such as the moon and traditional patterns her work draws from both historical research and emotional introspection.
Entirely self-taught in her cultural studies, she finds creative fuel in traditional Japanese art books and visual storytelling. Her materials of choice heavy body acrylic and Posca pens allow her to blend the thickness and drama of oil with the flexibility of fast-drying mediums. Through this combination, she manipulates detail, colour intensity, and texture with precision.
Her latest collection, “Oneesan”, reflects a growing personal and artistic maturity. Inspired by the structure and spirit of Geisha sisterhood, the series becomes both an educational tool and a visual tribute to the strength, artistry, and mentorship within this cultural lineage. Each piece invites viewers to engage more deeply with narratives that are often romanticized or misunderstood, offering an honest, beautifully stylized homage to the women who lived them.
“Ayako” – Beautiful Child
Stage: Maiko (Apprentice Geisha)
This delicate and introspective portrait introduces the viewer to a Maiko, a young apprentice in her early stages of training. The artist captures Ayako in a moment of reflection, framed by soft blues and vibrant floral accents. Her innocence is accentuated through graceful posture and warm yet bold colours. The pink moon behind her suggests both her dreams and the cultural heritage she is beginning to embody.
Original Acrylic and Posca
Framed size 50 cm x 68 cm
Presented in a traditional swept frame and gold slip, a mixture of traditional and modern, just like the artwork.
