Birmingham Open Studios 2025 - Artist Spotlight - Karoline Rerrie

Get ready to fall in love with bold colours, folk-charm, and the pure magic of hand-pulled print. Meet Karoline Rerrie, a genius illustrator and printmaker who makes screen-printing look like a colourful revolution. She’s joining us for Weekend Two only, and trust us, you don’t want to miss this!!

Her Process: Slow, Hands-On, Personal, and Fiercely Unique

Every single masterpiece starts as a doodle. Yep, every line, every pattern is drawn by hand first, then layered up with layers of glorious, eye-popping colour. Karoline uses a mix of photo stencils and simple hand-cut stencils to carefully push ink through screens, creating those vibrant, textured prints that make you stop in your tracks. Her work ranges from cheerful greetings cards to limited-edition prints, each one made with love, patience, and a whole lot of ink.

The Creative Vibe Behind the Colours

Karoline’s art is all about bold outlines, striking patterns, and eye-catching colours. Her style draws heavy inspiration from folk art, vintage ephemera, Polish paper cuts, Bulgarian stamps, and Soviet-era graphics, like travel souvenirs from her early adventures in Russia in the '90s. The result? Art that’s playful and precise, graphic and soft, full of life and personality. Basically, it’s an explosion of joy in print form.

Achievements and Collaborations

Her designs have graced everything from galleries and fairs to eco-friendly cups, like the ‘Morning Coffee’ design you’ll love. She’s published a series of greetings cards with Canns Down Press, including her whimsical ‘Wonderland’ collection and festive angels for Christmas charity packs. Not to mention her work on commissions and licensing projects that help her spread her colourful message far and wide.

Sharing the Craft

As a proud member of Leicester Print Workshop, Karoline is all about empowering others. She teaches screen-printing workshops, including at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, helping everyone from beginners to seasoned artists discover the joy of making gorgeous prints by hand. Her approachable, hands-on teaching style and dedication make her a fantastic advocate for the art form.

Why You Should Come

Because you’ll get to see bold, lively, hand-pulled prints happening right before your eyes. Karoline will demo her entire screen-printing process, from sketch to squeegee, colour by glorious colour. It’s art in real-time, and you get to be part of the magic, ask questions, and maybe even get a little inspired to start creating your own vibrant masterpieces.
