Frida Kahlo - Imogen Morris

Imogen creates incredible portraits using nail and thread. This limited edition print is taken from a recent portrait Imogen created of Art History Powerhouse, Frida Kahlo.

For this work, Imogen’s aim was to begin exploring deep, bold colours to represent the subject. This is a new move for Imogen who has historically steered clear of dark colours in favour of a lighter palette, for fear of the background paint overpowering the subject of the threaded portrait.

Imogen has applied colour theory when selecting rich reds, dark browns and sumptuous golds as a background and then using jungle greens and sapphire blues in the foreground to create a powerful, popping contrast.

For Imogen, these colours also reflect the bold and fearless character of Frida Kahlo. Frida Kahlo showed continued strength and resilience throughout years of chronic pain which often left her bed-ridden, she painted regardless of her physical ailments. Inspirational.
