Sophie-Rose Walters

Sophie-Rose Walters is a Birmingham-based artist whose mixed media creations are deeply rooted in Japanese aesthetics. Her artistry reimagines traditional Geisha artworks with a bold, feminine touch, and a palette that accentuates the elaborate patterns, textures, and surrealism of the Kimono. Walters challenges the subdued tones of classical Japanese art, opting instead for a vivid display that brings the elegance of these women to the forefront.

Utilizing fine liner pens, primarily in red and black, Walters captures the essence of Japanese cultural colours on heavy-weight paper. Her paintings, composed on canvas board, feature heavy body acrylics for a rich, striking background, while Posca pens outline and highlight the main figures. Gold metallic hues play a significant role in her work, reflecting their importance in Japanese tradition.

Walters’ passion for art is driven by her desire to create beauty and narrate stories. She was drawn to Japanese art for its elemental yet expressive nature, which allows viewers to interpret the unfolding narratives. Her commitment to authenticity is evident in her detailed research on real Geishas and their lives, as well as her dedication to learning Japanese, ensuring she honors and respects the culture she portrays. With each piece, Walters falls deeper in love with Japanese culture and her own artistic practice
