JAMES T SMITH

James T Smith is a multidisciplinary artist and maker whose primary focus lies in ceramics. Drawing inspiration from Japanese design aesthetics, his work seamlessly blends functionality and decoration, resulting in pieces that are both visually striking and deeply tactile. His approach juxtaposes sharp, minimal lines with organic textures, creating an interplay between precision and spontaneity. Favouring a limited, earthy palette and the raw, unglazed beauty of clay, James strives to highlight the intrinsic qualities of his materials, allowing their natural textures and imperfections to guide his process.

His journey into the arts began at the Margaret Street School of Art at Birmingham City University, where he earned his BA(Hons) in Fine Art. Initially focusing on painting and installation, James developed a keen eye for composition, spatial relationships, and materiality, principles that continue to inform his ceramic practice today. His transition into ceramics was serendipitous, emerging during the pandemic as a means of hands-on creative exploration. Drawn to the meditative and tactile nature of working with clay, he soon became immersed in the craft, joining a community pottery studio where he refined his techniques. Since then, he has been producing small batches of work, meticulously honing his forms and surfaces while developing a distinct and evolving artistic voice.

At the heart of James' practice is a deep appreciation for simplicity, balance, and material authenticity. Each piece reflects a harmonious interplay between design and texture, embracing both structural precision and the organic unpredictability of clay. Whether crafting functional wares or decorative objects, he seeks to create pieces that evoke a quiet, understated elegance, objects meant to be engaged with, held, and experienced in everyday life.
